"People have been getting the impression that I’m very anti-religious and believe that religion is the root of all evil that turn good people bad.
That isn’t true. I believe that religion is only as bad as the people who practise it.
I had a religions teacher whom I often refer to as “my priest” because he was the closest I’ll ever come to having one, and being a teacher was just something he did on the side. His real profession was that of a priest, and he was one of the most awesome people I’ve met. He had a profound respect for other religions and would sometimes even ask us to “not be so damn Christian” when we tried to understand a different religion. He was quite sad that he wasn’t allowed to wed homosexual couples, and had to settle for just blessing their civil unions.
Because like he said, “Everybody pick and choose what parts of the bible they think is important. Both those who believe in it, and those who are against it. It’s understandable, because so many parts contradicts each other so it’s all a matter of choosing what fits you best. I’ve been a priest for 24 years and I’ve chosen my parts”
Thanks to him I came to understand that religion is just another way for people to express their own ideas. If they don’t like gays, then the “homosexuality is a sin” part overwrites the “God loves everybody” part, and if people doesn’t mind gays it’s the other way around.
So there’s not really anything wrong with religion, just people’s own ideals. So that is why when people say, “The Bible/Koran/Torah says this and this is wrong!” my brain filters out the religious part and I just hear, “I think this and this is wrong!”
Yes, I know this will anger some religious people who believe their interpretation of their holy text is the right one, but you’ll have to find a way to deal with your own anger because I can’t be bothered."
